Your Visit

You will need to bring with you:

  • A Pen
  • Your original passport
  • 2 passport photos
  • Copies of any hospital records if you have been treated for TB either in the past or currently.

A TB clearance certificate will be issued within 3 days of the examination if the examination result is considered free of active pulmonary TB.

The Medical Examination

When attending for your visa medical, you will be asked to sign a consent form and you will also be asked about certain symptoms you may or may not have, as well as a TB contact history. Depending on your answers, a brief physical examination may be required.

A Chest X-Ray is required.

Children under 11

For children, a consent form needs to be signed by a parent or guardian and a symptom screen will be undertaken, as well as a TB contact history. A clinical examination is required for ALL children under 11, as of the date of their medical assessment.

Where a child has signs or symptoms of active pulmonary TB or a history of previous TB or a history of recent contact with a case of active TB, then the child will be required to have EITHER a Chest X-Ray or 3 sputum samples taken for TB on 3 consecutive early mornings.

Pregnant Women

The process is the same for an adult but there are different rules regarding the Chest X-Ray.

A pregnant woman can

  • Postpone the Chest X-Ray (and TB clearance) until after delivery
  • Continue with the Chest X-Ray in the second or third trimester with appropriate shielding.
  • Opt for TB clearance based on negative cultures from 3 appropriately taken sputum samples.

When a medical examination is required in any of the above, it is non-invasive and a chaperone is available on request.

Payment is accepted by debit/credit card or cash.

Adults/Children over 11 – £230.00
Children under 11 – £85.00

If a child under 11 requires a Chest X-Ray, then the fee is the same as the adult fee.

In the event of a Chest X-Ray showing old or active TB then 3 sputum samples for TB will be required. There will be an additional total cost of £135.00 for these.
